The Brazilian gained 12 positions in the GS class at the 8th round of the Michelin Pilot Challenge at VIR, demonstrating strong racecraft and recovery throughout the event.

Brazilian driver Kiko Porto (Banco Daycoval / Toyota Gazoo Racing / Team: Rafa Racing) finished the 8th round of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge in the Top 7 this weekend at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in Alton

Sharing the car with American teammate Varun Choksey, Porto mounted an impressive comeback during his stint in the GS class, driving the No. 12 Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO. The weekend got off to an excellent start for Kiko Porto and his team. In the very first free practice session, the Recife-born driver put the Toyota at the top of the timing sheets, showing that the package had the potential to fight for the leading positions. The performance boosted confidence heading into the rest of the weekend and confirmed that the car had competitive pace around the VIR circuit. In qualifying, however, it was Varun Choksey who took over driving duties in the No. 12 car to set the starting position. The American put the Toyota in 7th place in the GS class, securing a spot on the fourth row of the grid. The starting position left the duo in contention for the front-running positions from the opening laps. With a two-hour race ahead, strategy and the performance of both drivers would be crucial. At the start and throughout the opening stint, Choksey maintained a strong pace and climbed as high as 5th place before making his pit stop. The team executed the stop and completed the driver change, putting Kiko Porto back on track for the second half of the race. However, the No. 12 Toyota rejoined the battle in 19th place, creating a challenging situation for the Brazilian. From that point on, he would need to combine pace, consistency, and precision to make up ground. That was when Kiko Porto once again demonstrated his ability to fight back. With consistent driving and strong race pace, the Brazilian began carving his way through the field, gaining no fewer than 12 positions by the checkered flag to finish 7th in the GS class, completing an impressive recovery at VIR. "In the final part of the race, the car improved significantly and we were able to find a really good rhythm. I set the second-fastest lap of the race, which shows that we had the pace to run up front," said Kiko Porto. "After the driver change, we were way back and had to mount a comeback. We left VIR feeling that we fought until the very end, and that's very important heading into the next rounds." Attention now turns to the final stretch of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge season. Kiko Porto will return to the track for the 9th and penultimate round of the season from September 18 to 20 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis. The circuit holds a special place in the Brazilian driver's career and brings back fond memories, raising expectations for another competitive weekend in the GS class.
